Background

  • 12th Annual Nelson Mandela International Negotiations Competition was established by NBLSA to provide alternative dispute resolution competition and exposure opportunities to BLSA members.
  • The NMINC is the only non-litigation competition offered by NBLSA.
  • Participants negotiate complex cross-border issues that simulate real-world conflicts.

Competition Overview

  • No Regional Qualifying Competition.
  • Law schools send teams of two students to compete at the National Convention in Brooklyn, New York March 13-17, 2018.
  • Team are provided with general facts as well as confidential facts.
  • Confidential facts lay out the team and individual goals, motivations, and boundaries for heading into the negotiation.
  • Teams are scored on their ability to use creativity, teamwork, and strategic planning to reach a mutual agreement, while securing the best possible outcome for their side.

Purpose and Applicability

  • More than 95% of cases settle before trial. Even fewer reach the appellate courts.
  • Whether striving to be a litigator, transactional attorney, or anything in between, the ability to successfully negotiate and deal with people in high-stakes scenarios is a game-changer.
  • This competition is one of the best opportunities students will have during law school to develop their negotiation skills.

****Please note that all team members must be financially active for the 2017-2018 term by the close of the NMINC registration period. You will not be permitted to compete if you have not paid NBLSA dues for the 2017-2018 term.******
